Case Study

1. Retainer Support Client
2. Redundancy Project
3. Employment Investigation

Since 2018 we have been supporting a tech start up with setting up their HR function. This has entailed collection and maintenance of HR related data, supporting them with the recruitment, HR related due diligence to support investment funding rounds, disciplinary and performance management. A big part of the role has been providing impartial support and guidance to the CEO.

Whilst we have been supporting our client, the Company has gone through major investment funding rounds and for these we were responsible for gathering all relevant HR data and ensuring the company met all due diligence requirements from investors.

We have been integral in supporting with the recruitment of various senior roles with the company, designing and implementing a performance management process, managing the people element of a business restructuring exercise, implementing new HRIS, as well as managing the day-to-day HR. During this time our support for our client has flexed with their requirements ranging from 4hours a week to 20hrs a week when required.

Over the last 2 years we have been involved in supporting clients with the management and implementation of several significant employment changes including restructures, reorganisations and redundancies.

We worked with one restaurant who unfortunately was heading for insolvency as a result of the pandemic. The restaurant was employing approximately 30 employees and we supported them through a collective redundancy process. We expertly guided the client through what was an incredibly emotional time, with many employees having over 10 years service. Acting as a listening ear and confidant for the Managing Director, we supported them with all documentation required during the process, including timelines, briefing papers, meeting structures and all official letters.

We provided training for appointed Employee Representatives in advance of the consultations to provide ‘a level playing field’ and created bespoke Frequently Asked Questions for employees on the process to keep them informed of what was occurring. In addition, once the process was finalised we supported employees with outplacement support through a local charity to help them move on to a new role in the future.

We also supported a Premium Car Dealership with a restructure of their entire workforce in order to make cost savings. The company had been experiencing a downturn in business as a result they were having to make savings across the business. We worked with the client to find cost savings and to review the company structure. As a result, a new structure was proposed which identified areas where efficiencies could be made within the Finance/Admin function, Parts Team and the Workshop. As a consequence of this process the Company embarked on a redundancy exercise, supporting with developing a matrix assessment for the redundancies and worked with the client through all aspects of the redundancy. Supporting both the Managing Director and General Manager as well as providing comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions for employees. During the process, the employees within the workshop proposed reducing their working days to a 4 day week (with associated pay reductions) this would prevent the need for 1 compulsory redundancy. We  explore the feasibility of this option, informing all employees of the ‘real’ impact of this pay reduction on their take home pay in order for them to make an informed decision.

In 2020 we worked alongside the Board of a Agri-Food Company to help them with a very complex Employee Relations issue referred to us from one of the large national legal firms.

We provided mentoring and guidance to the Managing Director and Non-Executive Directors during the process taking into account employment law and the potential risks. We provided note taking support during all meetings and following the conclusion of the processes we conducted a full HR audit and making a range of recommendations for the Boards consideration this includes the introduction of training & development interventions for the workforce. We have now continued to provide light touch retained support for this client. This has included reviewing and updating the Company Handbook, recruitment support and Line Management Training.
